Do you have a workroom in the city, or just an office?

No — an office. We meet by appointment on Haight Street and our Bay Area team measures and installs on site, but the furniture is built at our own benches in Los Angeles. Valley Studio does not operate a San Francisco workroom, and we would rather say so than let a website imply otherwise.

Who measures and who installs?

Our own people, both times. A member of our Bay Area team measures the room and the access before anything is built, and our installers deliver and place the finished piece. We do not hand the work to a third party at either end.

How long does custom upholstery take?

New upholstery generally runs 16–20 weeks, with the clock starting at payment; re-upholstery of an existing piece generally 10–12 weeks. Those are general ranges, not dates — we give a firm schedule per order, and the fabric has to physically arrive at the workroom before we commit to a delivery date.

What does the consultation cost?

$500 for San Francisco projects — a site visit to measure and discuss design options — waived when the order is over $2,000. On orders of $2,000 or less the fee is kept rather than credited.

Do you work with homeowners, or only with designers?

Mostly with the trade — interior designers, architects and contractors — and also directly with homeowners. Either way you get a written estimate, a measure before anything is made, and one design partner as the point of contact through delivery.

Can upholstery be matched to drapery and shades on the same project?

Yes, and it is a common reason Bay Area designers consolidate with us. Upholstery, drapery and Roman shades for one house are made in the same Los Angeles workroom, so welts, trims and linings read consistently from a Pacific Heights living room to a bedroom in Marin.

Yes. A good share of our Bay Area work is for a second house — Marin, the Peninsula, Napa & Sonoma — where the owner is not on site. We measure, build, deliver and place around that, coordinating the install date with your team or the house manager and sending photographs before a piece ships.

Custom Upholstery in San Francisco

Valley Studio builds custom upholstered furniture for the San Francisco Bay Area — sofas and sectionals, chairs, benches, ottomans, headboards and beds, banquettes and upholstered walls — made to order from your drawing and your fabric. The order of operations is simple. A member of our Bay Area team meets you at the house or at our Haight Street office, measures the room and the route in, and takes the drawings and the fabric from there. The piece is built in our Los Angeles workroom in Van Nuys — frame, springing, fill, tailoring and finish, all under one roof — and comes back up to be placed by our own installers.

What that costs a designer is a photograph in place of a walk to the bench. We send them at frame, at deck and at finish, and we hold a finished piece for a scheduled review when someone wants to look before it crates. If something is wrong, it is wrong while it is still on our floor, which is the only place it is cheap to fix.

Built for Bay Area houses

Much of the housing stock here was built before anyone thought about getting a sectional up the stairs: a Victorian or Edwardian with a narrow turn at the landing, a flat over a garage on a hill, a Peninsula ranch with a wide door and a tight hall. We confirm access before fabrication and build in two pieces or knock-down where it is needed, so the piece assembles in the room rather than at the curb.

The light matters as much as the stairs. A bay window on the south or west side takes strong afternoon sun between the fog, and it will fade a seat and an arm long before the rest of the piece. We will say so at the fabric stage, and pair the upholstery with lined drapery or a shade from the same workroom where a room needs it.

How a Bay Area upholstery project runs

It starts with sizes, photos and the fabric you have in mind. From those we prepare a written estimate — a rough one from your dimensions first if that helps — and nothing is built from a guess: our Bay Area team measures on site before an order is placed, and for built-in banquettes and fitted cushions a technician makes a template of the space. The site visit to measure and talk through options is $500 for San Francisco projects, waived on orders over $2,000.

Orders start on a 50% deposit and usually run C.O.M. (customer’s own material): you specify and ship the fabric or leather to our Los Angeles workroom against the order, and we confirm yardage off the drawings before cutting. The frame is built in our framing shop in Van Nuys, then tailored and finished by hand in our upholstery room — nothing is white-labeled and nothing is made overseas.

Finished pieces come up to the Bay Area and are placed by our own installers, not a freight company; delivery is billed separately on the estimate. We confirm access before the build — a narrow Victorian stair, a hillside lot, a Peninsula landing — and construct in two pieces or knock-down where the house requires it.
