Custom Drapery and Drapes in San Francisco
Valley Studio makes custom drapes for the San Francisco Bay Area — pleated, ripplefold and hand-finished panels, lined, interlined or blackout, in the fabric you specify. Our Bay Area team meets you by appointment at our Haight Street office or on site, measures every window, and hangs and dresses the finished treatment; the sewing is done in our own Los Angeles workroom. We have been making window treatments since 1985, formerly as Valley Drapery & Upholstery.

A member of our Bay Area team meets you at the house or at our Haight Street office and measures every window before the order is placed. The panels are cut, pleated and hand-finished in our Los Angeles workroom in Van Nuys — the same workroom that sews our Roman shades, so a drapery-and-shade scheme for one house shares the fabric, lining and finishing — then come back up to be hung and dressed by our own installers.
Because the measure and the install are ours, the distance to the workroom is not something you manage. The mount, the stack and the return are settled in the room; the yardage is confirmed before cutting; the panels are checked on our floor before they ship.
Drapes for Bay Area windows
The windows here set the terms. A Victorian or Edwardian bay wants panels that stack clear of the glass and a track that follows the angle; a Pacific Heights window wall wants ripplefold on a motorized track; a Marin living room with the whole afternoon coming through the west glass wants interlining and a shade behind it. We make all three and will say which one a room needs.
A good share of the work is for a second house in Marin, the Peninsula or Napa & Sonoma where the owner is not on site. We coordinate the measure and the install with your team or the house manager, and send photographs from the workroom before a treatment ships.

How a Bay Area drapery project runs
Send the windows, photos and the fabric you have in mind and we prepare a written estimate; a rough one from your dimensions can come first. Before anything is cut, a member of our Bay Area team measures on site — the reveal, the stack, the mount, the return — because a Victorian bay is rarely square and the drawings never say so. The site visit is $500 for San Francisco projects, waived on orders over $2,000.
Most orders run C.O.M. (customer’s own material): you specify and ship the face fabric to our Los Angeles workroom against the order, and we confirm yardage from the measurements before cutting. Our drapery room in Van Nuys cuts, pleats and finishes each panel by hand, with the lining and interlining you specified and a fullness of about 2.6 times the finished width unless the design calls for something else.
Window treatments generally run 8–12 weeks, with the clock starting once both the payment and the fabric have arrived. The finished panels come up to the Bay Area and our own installers hang, dress and train them on site, on hardware we supply — we install only treatments and hardware we make.
Frequently asked questions
- Do you have a workroom in the city, or just an office?
No — an office, by appointment, on Haight Street. Our Bay Area team measures and installs on site; the panels are sewn in our Los Angeles workroom. Valley Studio does not operate a San Francisco workroom, and we would rather say so than let a website imply otherwise.
- Who measures and who installs the drapery?
Our own people at both ends. A member of our Bay Area team measures every opening before the order is placed, and our installers hang the panels, set the hardware and dress the folds so a treatment draws cleanly from the first day. We do not ship panels to a third-party installer.
- Which drapery styles do you make?
Pinch pleats in two or three fingers, French, inverted, box, goblet and cartridge pleats; ripplefold and wave on a track; and rod-pocket, grommet, tab-top, gathered and café styles. Linings are privacy or blackout, in white or ivory, with house, blanket or blackout interlining where a panel needs body or a bedroom needs dark.
- How do you handle fog and strong afternoon sun?
Lining and interlining do most of the work. A west- or south-facing bay takes hard sun between the fog, and an unlined silk or linen will fade and rot at the leading edge first. We specify the lining for the exposure, interline where a fabric is fragile, and will tell you at the fabric stage if a goods choice is going to suffer in that exposure — a Roman or a solar shade behind the panel is often the answer.
- Do you supply hardware and motorization?
Yes. We supply our own house drapery hardware in standard finishes, custom iron, and tracks — including motorized tracks from Somfy, Lutron and Crestron. We install the motors and set the limits; home-automation integration is done by the client’s AV company. We install only hardware and treatments we make.
- How long does a Bay Area drapery order take?
Window treatments generally run 8–12 weeks, and the clock starts when both the payment and the fabric have arrived — whichever comes last. That is a general range rather than a date: we give a firm schedule per order, and we do not commit to an install until the fabric has physically arrived at the workroom.
- What does the consultation cost?
$500 for San Francisco projects — a site visit to measure and discuss design options — waived when the order is over $2,000. On orders of $2,000 or less the fee is kept rather than credited. We work mostly with designers and architects, and also directly with homeowners.
