Custom Furniture in Los Angeles
Valley Studio builds custom furniture to designers’ drawings. Sofas and sectionals, lounge and dining chairs, benches, ottomans, headboards and beds — made to order in our Los Angeles workroom, where the same benches have been cutting frames and pulling upholstery since 1985. We work with the trade across the city, Beverly Hills, Malibu, Pasadena and Orange County.

Pieces we designed and build ourselves in the Los Angeles and Long Island City workrooms. Every one is made to order — dimensions, frame, wood, finish and upholstery are set per order, so any of these is a starting point rather than a fixed product.

What we build
The work splits two ways. Upholstered pieces — seating, benches, headboards, and wall and ceiling upholstery — go onto hardwood frames, tied or sprung to the drawing and filled for how the piece is meant to sit. Wood pieces — occasional tables, cabinetry, bed frames — are made or specified to the drawing and finished by hand.
A designer sends dimensions, a frame or a reference, and the goods; we build to it. There is nothing to order from a catalog, though the House Collection above is a reasonable place to start if you want a silhouette to modify.
Frames, fill and finish
Nothing about a piece is rounded to a standard. Seat height, seat depth, arm shape, back pitch and the crown of a cushion are set on the order, because those are the dimensions a designer is actually specifying when they draw a sofa.
Frames are hardwood, built or specified to the drawing. Seats are tied or sprung depending on how the piece should sit, and the fill is chosen the same way — a sofa that gets used every day and a lounge chair that gets used twice a month are not the same build. Wood is finished by hand, and a sample can go out for approval before the piece is finished.
Delivery and access
We confirm access before fabrication — door widths, stair turns, elevator dimensions — and build knock-down or in two pieces where a hillside house or a gated property requires it.
Our own crews deliver and place the work across Greater Los Angeles; we don’t hand a finished sofa to a freight company. Ground-floor delivery is standard unless there is a working elevator, and stairs are quoted.
Recent work
For a Beachwood Canyon residence we built a full program of upholstered seating to the designer’s drawings, paired with shutters and pillows, then delivered and placed it through the house. (Described without client detail.)
How an order runs
Most orders run C.O.M.: you specify and ship the fabric or leather to the workroom against the order, and we confirm yardage off the drawings before anything is cut. Where a piece warrants it we build a deck or a muslin first and have the designer look at it.
Orders start on a 50% deposit, with the balance due before the piece ships. From approved drawings to install, most furniture programs run two to six months — driven by fabric delivery more often than by the bench.
Frequently asked questions
- Do you build the furniture yourselves?
Yes. Frames, upholstery and finishing all happen in our own Los Angeles workroom. Nothing is white-labeled and nothing is made overseas, and a designer is welcome to come look at a piece mid-build.
- Can you build from my drawing, or do I have to pick from a collection?
From your drawing. Send dimensions, a frame or a reference photo, and the goods you’ve specified, and we’ll build to it. If it is easier to start from an existing silhouette and change the arm, the depth or the base, the House Collection is there for that.
- How does C.O.M. work?
You specify the fabric or leather and ship it to the workroom against the order. We calculate yardage from the drawings and confirm it before cutting, so nothing is started before the goods are in hand and reserved.
- Can we see the piece before it is delivered?
The workroom is open to the designer by appointment, and we will send photographs at frame, at deck and at finish if a visit is not practical. Most designers look at the muslin or the deck, which is the point in the build where a change is still cheap.
- What happens if a finished piece will not fit the elevator?
We ask that question before we build, not after. Where access is tight we construct in two pieces or knock-down so the piece assembles in the room. If a site turns out to be tighter than the survey, the piece is already designed to come apart.
