Custom Shades in San Francisco
Valley Studio makes custom Roman shades and specialty window shades for the San Francisco Bay Area — flat, relaxed, soft-fold and hard-fold Romans, woven shades, balloon and London styles — sewn to order in your fabric. Our Bay Area team meets you by appointment at our Haight Street office or on site, measures every window and installs the finished shades; the sewing happens in our Los Angeles workroom in Van Nuys. We have been making window treatments to specification since 1985, formerly as Valley Drapery & Upholstery.

A member of our Bay Area team meets you at the house or at our Haight Street office, measures each window and takes the drawings and the fabric from there. The shade is sewn and finished in our Los Angeles workroom in Van Nuys — the same workroom that makes our drapery, bedding and upholstery — and comes back up to be installed by our own installers.
What that costs a designer is a photograph in place of a walk to the table. We send them before a shade ships, and anything that is wrong is wrong while it is still on our floor, which is the only place it is cheap to fix.
Shades for Bay Area windows
Victorian and Edwardian bays, tall double-hungs and wide modern openings all want a different shade: an inside mount that clears the sash, a relaxed Roman that softens a formal room, a blackout-lined flat Roman where a bedroom faces the morning light. We decide the mount and the lining with you on site, before anything is cut.
Fog and strong western sun are both part of the brief in San Francisco. Lining protects the face fabric, interlining adds body and insulation, and a motorized shade on a high or hard-to-reach window saves a daily reach.

How a Bay Area shade project runs
It starts with the windows, photos and the fabric you have in mind. From those we prepare a written estimate, and nothing is cut from a guess: a member of our Bay Area team measures on site — inside or outside mount, the reveal, the stack, how each shade should operate — before an order is placed. The site visit to measure and talk through options is $500 for San Francisco projects, waived on orders over $2,000.
Orders start on a 50% deposit and usually run C.O.M. (customer’s own material): you ship the fabric to our Los Angeles workroom against the order, and we confirm yardage from the shade measurements before cutting. Our Roman room in Van Nuys sews, lines and finishes each shade by hand, then our own installers mount them, set the limits on motorized shades and check the operation of every one on site.
Frequently asked questions
- Do you have a workroom in the city, or just an office?
No — an office, by appointment, on Haight Street. Our Bay Area team measures and installs on site; the shades are sewn in our Los Angeles workroom. Valley Studio does not operate a San Francisco workroom, and we would rather say so than let a website imply otherwise.
- Which Roman shade styles do you make?
Flat, relaxed (our default), soft fold and hard fold, plus balloon and London styles. Woven shades are made as flat Romans. Each is lined for how the window should read — privacy or blackout lining in white or ivory, with optional interlining for body and insulation — which matters on a south- or west-facing bay that takes strong afternoon sun between the fog.
- Can the shades be motorized?
Yes. We can use any motor — Lutron, Somfy, Crestron and others — and we supply and install the motor and set the shade limits. We do not do smart-home or home-automation integration; your AV company handles that side. Clutch (bead-chain) and cordless controls are the alternatives.
- Do you also supply roller, solar or cellular shades?
Yes. Roller, solar, cellular and other hard shades and blinds are made by vendors we work with — Lutron, Hartmann & Forbes, Conrad, Fabritec and Hunter Douglas — and installed by our own team, often alongside the Romans for the same house. We install what we make and what we supply, not treatments bought elsewhere.
- How long do custom shades take?
Generally 8–12 weeks, and the clock starts when both payment and fabric are in hand, whichever arrives last. That is a general range rather than a date — we give a firm schedule per order, and the fabric has to physically arrive at the workroom before we commit to an install date.
- Who measures and who installs?
Our own people at both ends. A member of our Bay Area team measures every opening before anything is sewn, and our own installers mount, level and test each shade on site across the city, Marin, the Peninsula and Napa & Sonoma.
- Can shades be coordinated with drapery on the same project?
Yes. Shades and drapery for one house are sewn in the same Los Angeles workroom, so fabric, lining and finishing match from a Pacific Heights living room to a bedroom in Marin.
- What if a shade cord breaks later?
We send a technician to repair it and fix the cause, not just re-string it. A repeat failure on our own work is treated as warranty.
